The long and honorable history of the Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Directors begins in 1854 when a gentleman named Cyrus C. Hildreth first moved to this area from New York with his family. Because logging was the major industry of the time and Cyrus was a contractor who built saw mills, a move close to the Grand River was a smart one. However, when the Civil War began in 1861, he left his wife and children and joined with the Northern forces even though he was related to Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States. A few months later, one of his sons named William, who was then only sixteen years old and too young to serve, managed to enlist in the 3rd Michigan Calvary and served under General Custer during the earlier part of the war. Later in the war, William was transferred to the 10th Michigan Calvary under General Sheridan and there discovered his father Cyrus was assigned to the same troop.
